REVIEWS FOR Recorded and Produced by Philip Schuyler: Moroccan Street Music

Cultural Survival Quarterly

Performing in the crowded market places of Morocco, the musicians must compete with the din and cacophony of urban life. They sing songs celebrating weddings, folk legends and special events. The first track on this recording, written in the 1940s, tells of the American military presence after the invasion of North Africa during World War II. Another track describes a typical Moroccan country courtship which culminates in plans of marriage. The traveling musicians must be able to adapt their style and repertory to appeal to a diverse audience. This rich collection features performances by some of Morocco's greatest street players and features traditional instruments, including the Ud, Darbuka, Etta'rija, Bendir and Tar drums. Recorded and Produced by Philip Schuyler, Lyrichord Discs, 141 Perry Street, New York, NY 10014.
